Rana Udai Singh founded Udaipur after the
fall of Chittor to Akbar in 1568. As the defeat meant losing
his seat of power, Udai Singh II started looking for a place
to re-establish his base.
The Legend
Legend
has it that the king met a holy man meditating on the hill
overlooking the beautiful Pichola Lake during one of his hunting
expeditions. This hermit blessed the king and advised him
to build a palace on the very spot, as it would be well protected.
The king followed the advice and in course of time the beautiful
city of Udaipur came into being near the Pichola Lake.
After the Reign of Maharana Udai Singh
Maharana Pratap Singh took over the reigns after the death
of Udai Singh and tried his best to defend his city from all
sorts of external aggression. The history of Udaipur is replete
with some of the bloodiest battles in Indian history, the
Haldighati battle between Maharana Pratap and the Mughals
being of utmost historical importance. With the advent of
the British, a treaty to protect Udaipur was signed between
the ruler and the British. The history of Udaipur took another
important turn when it was merged with the Indian Territory
after independence.
