Sheetala Ashtami

Sheetala ashtamiSheetala Ashtami Festival, Rajasthan TourismThe Sheetala Ashtami Festival is celebrated every year between March and April in a village called Chaksu near Jaipur. Held in honor of Sheetala Mata, the goddess of small pox, special prayers and rituals become the order of the day during this festival. The village folk believe that a number of epidemics spread due to wrath of Sheetala Mata, so they make a number of offerings to pacify the deity who is represented by a red stone.

The market that comes up during the festival is very popular with the devotees that flock the shrine of Sheetala Mata. Locally made shoes, clothes, food and agricultural implements are the main items on sale during the fair. Along with religious rituals music and dance can also be seen and heard in plenty during Sheetala Ashtami. It is great to watch people divided in colorful clusters offer a great display of their musical talents. In the coming year (2009) the Sheetala Ashtami Festival is going to be held on 19th March.
