The International Kite Festival of Jaipur is one of the most awaited events of the year. Held in January, this 3-day grand affair truly celebrates the spirit of humanity and the sheer joy of living. Kites of different sizes and colors dot the sky of Jaipur during this festival that falls on Makar Sankranti.
Kite Festival, Rajasthan Tour PackagesThe Kite Festival starts with an inauguration at the Polo Grounds after which it is divided into two sections - the Fighter Kite section and the Friendly Kite Flying section. You are treated to a wonderful sight of Air Force helicopters releasing kites from the sky with children on the ground complementing them by releasing colorful balloons. Then starts the fun with kites of various hues fluttering up towards the sky and presenting a delightful sight to everyone present on the ground.
Speaking of the competitions, the ones vying for the Fighter Kite prize indulge in some frenzied activity trying to pull down another's kite. In fact, every other kite in the sky is counted as an adversary. This contest is great fun to watch as the contestants who come from far and wide battle it out among themselves. On the other hand, the ones in the friendly kite flying section opt for the sober way of sending their elaborately designed kites to the sky to let others enjoy their splendor. It may be mentioned that prestigious prizes are to be won in both categories during the Jaipur Kite Festival.
On the third and final day of the kite festival, the action shifts to the Umaid Bhawan Palace, the royal residence of the Maharaja of Jodhpur. The finals of both the Fighter Kite and Friendly Kite Flying contests are held and at the end the prizes are given away by the Maharaja himself. A farewell dinner with the Maharaja marks the culmination of this grand affair after which the locals and tourists depart only to come back for another exciting round the next year.
