History of Sawai Madhopur
Sawai Madhopur was built by Sawai Madho Singh-I in 1765. The history of Sawai Madhopur traces back to the time when the legacy of Muslim rulers were about to start in the country leading to numerous political unrests and power shifting. It was the time when after the fall of Prithviraj Chauhan, a number of Chauhan kingdoms vanished and a number of battles was staged on the land of Rajasthan. It was Govinda, the grandson of Prithviraj Chauhan who ruled Sawai Madhopur as a feudatory of the sultan of Delhi in the 13 th century.
After his death, his successor Vagabhatta took control of Ranthambore fort and ruled for 12 years and was involved ion frequent battles with the sultans. Sawai Madhopur throne suffered many changes and shifting in authority, but it was Sawai Madho Singh I who restored its previous glory in the 18 th century. In 1754 Mughal Emperor Shah Alam handed over the control of Ranthambore Fort to Sawai Madho Singh and the surrounding area of the fort was used as the personal hunting ground of the king. From a king's personal gaming ground to the famous national park of present time, Sawai Madhopur has come a long way.
