History of Pushkar
Pushkar history Pushkar is a fantastic interplay of history and mythology that makes it worthwhile to travel to this holy destination of Rajasthan.

According to lore, the city of Pushkar came into being After a battle between Lord Brahma and a demon named Vajra Nabh. After the demon was killed by Brahma with the help of a lotus flower, three petals floated down to Earth and landed in Pushkar leading to the creation of the three lakes of Pushkar.

Recorded history shoes that Pushkar was a favorite retreat of the Mughal rulers, which was later taken over by the Scindias after the eventual decline of the Mughal rule. The Scindias handed over the city to the British thus making Pushkar one of the few places in Rajasthan to be under direct British control, until Independence.

The colorful shop and markets of Pushkar can be rightly referred to as an extension of Rajasthan's vibrant culture whereby the shopping in Pushkar can be easily described as exotic, lively and ethnic.

The Pushkar markets are full of tinkling bangles, beads, embroidered clothes and shoes. As souvenirs, you can choose from a range of leather goods and colorful wooden toys. Shopping during the Pushkar fair is special fun as you are sure to be regaled by folk performances, camel races and other such events while you browse through the Pushkar markets. While shopping in Pushkar, make sure that you visit Sarafa Bazaar, Baza Bazaar and Kedalganj Bazaar, which would add a new dimension to shopping in Rajasthan.

Located just 11 km from Ajmer, Pushkar is a sacred little town in Rajasthan. Pushkar is famous for its scenic beauty and more than 400 temples. Pushkar has a number of exciting tourists attractions including the famous Pushkar Lake and Brahma Temple. The annual Pushkar Fair held every year in Oct-Nov is another major attraction for tourists.

Things to See in Pushkar

Pushkar Lake: One of the most sacred sites for Hindus, Pushkar Lake is the most famous tourist attraction in the holy town of Pushkar. It's a beautiful semi-circular lake with 52 lovely ghats surrounding it. According to beliefs, a dip in the Pushkar Lake on the auspicious occasion of Karthik Poornima brings salvation to devotees.

Brahma Temple: It's the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe according to Hindu mythology, in all over India. The beautiful marble temple is famous for its four-headed idol of lord Brahma. It's decorated with silver coins and a silver turtle on its black and white chequered floor.

Savitri Temple: Dedicated to goddess Savitri, the first wife of Lord Brahma, it's the second most important temple in Pushkar. Located just behind the Brahma Temple on a hilltop, it provides a panoramic view of the scenic Pushkar Lake and exotic sand dunes nearby

Rangji or Rangnath Temple: Rangji Temple is known for its gracious south Indian style of architecture. The temple houses a huge image of Lord Vishnu. It has a high rising 'Gopuram' (large gate) and Garuda pillars studded with a mythical bird styled in gold.

Varah Temple: One of the most sacred temples in Pushkar, Varah Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It has an image of Vishnu in the incarnation of wild boar. According to a legend, Lord Vishnu visited the earth in the incarnation of a Varah (Wild boar) to kill an atrocious demon Hirnayaksh.

Apteshwar Temple: Another important temple in Pushkar, this 12th century temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

How to Reach Pushkar
The city of Pushkar is easily accessible by all means of transportation options.

Air:
The nearest airport to Pushkar is the Jaipur airport that is located at a distance of 138 kms and operates several flights to and from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Udaipur.

Road:
A good network of roads ensures that Pushkar is easily reachable by road. There are two major bus stands in Pushkar- the Marwar bus stand and the Ajmer bus stand that see a heavy flow of buses coming and going in form various cities of Rajasthan and India.

Rail:
Ajmer, located at a distance of 11 km away from Pushkar, is the nearest railway station. It has regular train services to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur and Ahmedabad.
