The 'Golden City' of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan was
established in 1156 AD by a local Rajput chieftain named Rawal
Jaisal who was a Bhati Rajput. Situated right in the middle of
the Thar Desert, the history of Jaisalmer points out that it takes
its name after its founder who belonged to one of the most courageous
Rajput clans in Rajasthan. The local peole in Rajasthan still
sing praises of these gallant warriors who always considered honor
to be greater than anything else.
The Legend
The history of Jaisalmer is replete with a number of legends as
well. According
to one, Lord Krishna had predicted that a descendant of the
Yadav clan would establish a formidable kingdom atop the Trikuta
Hill in Jaisalmer. True to his words, Rawal Jaisal established
his kingdom on this very hill!
The Significance of Jaisalmer in the Past
Jaisalmer was an essential hub of trade and commerce during the
medieval period, in view of the fact that it was exactly situated
on the ancient trade route that connected India to the markets
in Egypt, Arabia, Persia and Africa. However history states that
Jaisalmer also had its own share of battles and intrigues that
went a long way in shaping its destiny. Eventually Jaisalmer became
a part of independent India in 1947. Jaisalmer lost its importance
after the Mumbai port surfaced in due time. Later on, the two
crucial Indo-Pak wars re-established Jaisalmer's importance as
a border state and also as a significant component of Rajasthan's
glorious history.
