As we dig into the crinkled pages of Bharatpur
history, numerous legends connecting to the tales of the great epic Mahabharata and Ramayana come
forward. It is believed that Bharatpur was a part of the erstwhile
kingdom of Matsya Desh, which prospered in the 5th century BC.
It is widely advocated that this is the land, in the woods of
which, Pandavas spent their one-year of exile. According to
another legend, the town has gained its name from Bharat, the
younger brother of Lord Rama. Bharat was revered here as the
family deity of Bharatpur royal family.
Apart from the legends and mythologies, the historical tales
of Bharatpur say that Bharatpur was founded by Maharaja Suraj
Mal in 1733 AD and was carved out of a region named Mewat. Though
Suraj Mal is credited for the foundation of Bharatpur, it is
believed that his Jat chief named Rustam actually set up the
town. Suraj Mal eventually captured the Bharatpur Fort from
Rustam's son and expanded the city in course of time.
Since 17th century, it’s the Jats who dominated the history
of Bharatpur. Himself a Jat, Suraj Mal united the Jat-force
thus redefining a new page in the history. He also built a number
of palaces and forts out of which the Pleasure Palace Complex
in Deeg is worth mentioning.
